34 Stories from our Partners Incubating East African Integrators E ast African citizens are not fully aware of the advantages of EAC integration as they lack vis- ible and tangible examples. For this purpose the EAC Secretariat and the Regional Dialogue Committee (RDC), with financial support from the GIZ-EAC programme, implemented and developed the ‘Incubator for Integration and Development in East Africa’ (IIDEA). IIDEA pro- vides an opportunity to develop and showcase real-life applications and initiatives that utilise the common market. Civil society, private sector, and other interest groups from East Africa develop and propose small- scale regional integration projects that IIDEA supports. The IIDEA Committee (comprising RDC, EAC Secretariat, Ministries of East African Affairs, and GIZ representatives) selects the projects. A financial, technical, and advisory support package is put together and a work plan is agreed upon. The project’s ability to showcase real-life experiences of regional integration is then monitored. These real-life projects shine a light on the realities – opportunities and challenges – that have been brought about by the Common Market Protocol and its associated rights and freedoms.
