8 9 I n 2018, the East African Community and Germany were looking back at 20 years of successful development cooperation. This anniversary was commemorated by a picture exhibition themed 20 Years – 20 Faces – 20 Results at the headquarters of the EAC. The exhibition highlighted and illustrated 20 years of cooperation and the progress it brought for East African citizens. While looking back into the past of the cooperation, the future was discussed as well. A timeline on the floor, starting in 1998 and ending in 2018, connected memorable events and milestones of this period to the views and opinions of contemporary citizens of East Africa. The exhibition gave insight into the lives of East African citizens and their personal experiences of regional integration. It was jointly opened by the Secretary General of the EAC, Amb. Liberat Mfumukeko, German Ambassador Dr. Detlef Wächter, and Mr Niels Breyer, Head of the Division East Africa at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in Germany. Development cooperation between the EAC and Germany started in 1998 with just one GTZ advisor supporting the EAC Permanent Tripartite Commission. It has since developed into many projects and programmes with well over 30 staff members, most of them regional experts from across the EAC Partner States.
