Advancing the Mobility of East African Engineers: Unleashing Digital Potentials for Mutual Recognition Agreements (GIZ)

The East African Community (EAC) is unwavering in its commitment to fostering regional integration through innovative initiatives. GIZ DIGEAT (Digitalisation for East African Trade and Integration) is an ambitious project that aims to revolutionise the movement of engineers across EAC borders.

Recognising the importance of seamless engineer mobility for regional expansion and enhancing trade in services, DIGEAT envisions easing cross-border transitions by implementing mutual recognition agreements among EAC Partner States, kicking off with the one for engineers. The absence of efficient data exchange mechanisms among competent authorities from Partner States has been identified as a significant obstacle impeding this process. To overcome this challenge, a pioneering approach has been anticipated, with a realistic idea to break down trade barriers and drive progress.

Recently, DIGEAT organised a significant design thinking workshop that brought together a diverse group of exceptional individuals. Their collective goal was to develop potential innovative prototypes for a digital data exchange mechanism that would meet the needs of competent authorities. A human-centered approach to tackling issues encouraged participants to use their imagination and compassion to craft creative and compassionate solutions, laying the groundwork for transformative outcomes.
