East Africans Encouraged to Champion Regional Identity for Stronger Integration.

Citizens of the East African Community (EAC) have been encouraged to embrace a stronger regional identity as East Africans, a move EAC Head of States endorsed during their recent Summit to deepen integration for improved livelihoods of EAC Citizens across the region.

The call was made during the Secretary General leadership handover ceremony held at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha on 24th April 2026, where the newly appointed Secretary General, Ambassador Stephen Mbundi, officially assumed office from the outgoing Secretary General, Ms Veronica Nduva.

The event brought together EAC staff, Civil Society Organisations, Private Sector representatives and development partners, including the European Union Delegation to Tanzania and the EAC and German Development Agency (GIZ).

In his remarks, Ambassador Mbundi underscored the importance of fostering a common East African identity as a foundation for achieving the Community’s long-term vision. He noted that prioritising regional cooperation over national interests would help unlock greater economic opportunities, strengthen social cohesion and enhance collective resilience.

He further pledged to work closely with Partner States, institutions and stakeholders to advance the Community’s strategic objectives and improve the livelihoods of East Africans.

Outgoing Secretary General Ms Nduva congratulated her successor and urged EAC staff and stakeholders to continue supporting the institution’s integration agenda. She emphasised that effective leadership requires transparency, accountability and inclusiveness in addressing the region’s political, economic and social priorities.

Uganda’s Minister for East African Community Affairs, Mr James Ikuya, who officiated as chief guest, highlighted the need to eliminate trade barriers and strengthen the free movement of goods and services across the region. He also stressed the importance of building a self-reliant and sustainable Community through effective mobilisation and utilisation of internal resources.
