ABOUT AfCFTA
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is the Pan-African instrument to boost intra-African trade. It aims at creating a single African market by deepening the economic integration of the continent. AfCFTA will aid the movement of capital and people as well as facilitating investment, thereby moving Africa towards the establishment of a future continental customs union. Accelerating intra-African trade and boosting Africa's trading position in the global market by strengthening Africa's common voice and policy space in global trade negotiations is being facilitated in the EAC with EAC-GIZ support.
EAC-GIZ is supporting the EAC in AfCFTA negotiations including investment, intellectual property right and competition. The Partner States are finalising their tariff offers for 90% of tariff lines for trade in goods and positions on request and offer for their respective schedules of commitment in five sectors – Tourism, Business, Communications, Financial and Transport services. Regarding regulatory frameworks, audits have been finalised for Kenya and Uganda while support to other Partner States on this matter is ongoing. Furthermore, a readiness and needs assessment for the Partner States on the implementation of the AfCFTA is being conducted.
The GIZ support to the AfCFTA is commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
